The Importance of the 80s

While every decade is essential to learn about, the 1980s truly stand out. While the decade was full of hardships, it was also full of progress, innovations, and social movements.

1. Political Culture

Politics and culture came together during the 80s. Reagan’s policies influenced the political landscape and the pop culture of the time. Music, movies, and television reflected and criticized the political climate.

By examining pop culture, students can better understand the way politics spread through daily life. This includes fashion trends and the portrayal of gender roles in media. This even includes the rise of “action heroes” like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator and Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo.

2. Technological Innovations

Personal computers, video game consoles, and the rise of cable television transformed how people interacted with media. For instance, people became obsessed with Nintendo, Atari, and Sega. The technological innovations from the 80s greatly reflect items students cannot live without today!

3. Social Movements

The 1980s was a decade that gave rise to numerous subcultures, many of which challenged traditional social norms. From the emergence of hip-hop to the spread of punk rock, the 1980s were a time of dynamic cultural expression.

Studying subcultures allows students to understand how marginalized groups used music, fashion, and activism to challenge mainstream cultural expectations. This decade laid the groundwork for social change that continues today.

4. Economic Shifts

The decade saw a shift towards corporate growth and the growing gap between the rich and the poor. This was reflected in movies, television, and music. For instance, Bruce Springsteen often sang about the pride and hardships of the working class struggles.
