Teaching the Iron Triangle

Learning all about how the government works is quite complex. While there are specific terms, groups, and meanings, how people interpret them differs. Additionally, groups and leaders may want to achieve their own goals and interests while ignoring what is best for all citizens. Many times, this occurs through Iron Triangle relationships. So, students must pay attention when teachers are teaching the Iron Triangle. They need to understand how this works and how people can cover up what is happening to keep actions secretive. Students also need to learn how Iron Triangle relationships are not always bad. They can actually be really helpful and supportive to a large population of people. What is the Iron Triangle?

Specifically, the Iron Triangle is a relationship between a bureaucratic agency, an interest group, and a congressional committee. These components work together to achieve their specific goals. This is because the agenda matches the wishes of certain groups with narrow interests versus the common good of all individuals. So, it is important for students to really understand the Iron Triangle and the different ways organizations utilize it.

Students will select an issue they care about. Honestly, this is a great way to incorporate their interest and passions, both imperative to an Iron Triangle! Then, they will select Congressional Committees that help advocate for this issue. Students will then apply their knowledge in explaining how the groups work together to achieve their goals on this issue.
