Honestly, there are probably many situations that students can immediately think about when they’ve had to compromise. Whether this is on a sports team, at a job, or working on a project, students spend a lot of time working together. So, they know how hard it is for everyone to agree on something. While this can be frustrating to go through, it helps students understand essential components regarding the foundation of the United States. For instance, when developing the Constitution, the founders had to develop fundamental principles to help guide decisions. Thankfully, the Principles of the Constitution allow students to learn these components and how much thought went into this document.

Principles of the Constitution

Developing the United States Constitution was a challenging task. It took multiple people with different thoughts and beliefs to come together and compromise. Thankfully, they used principles of the Constitution to help form their new government to ensure it was fair and honest.

The resource includes a lesson plan, readings, handouts, and teacher key. Luckily, this means there is very little prep on this crucial topic! All of the resources are organized to ensure teachers can dedicate their time to working with students.

Lesson Plan

It is frustrating to purchase a product and find confusing directions on how to use it. Thankfully, that won’t be a problem with the Principles of the Constitution! There is a complete lesson plan to outline each step of the activity. This includes going through the different principles with students, having them jot down important details, and completing a group activity.

Introducing the Topic

Before diving into a project, students need to have some understanding of the topic. So, there is a Google Slides activity and note taking sheet ready. As a class, students will learn about each principle and its importance. They will take notes throughout, which will help them in the next activity.

Jigsaw Method

The Principles of the Constitution uses the jigsaw method for students to learn about the 6 components. Instead of overwhelming students with 6 passages, they will divide into 6 groups and become “experts” on one principle. Then, they will learn about the other principles from the rest of the groups. Honestly, this is a great way to build a strong classroom community!

Applying their Knowledge

Teachers always hope students can take material from the classroom and apply it to different aspects of life. Thankfully, there is an activity to help students do this!

Students will finish the lesson by matching each principle to examples. This is a great way to ensure students understand the material and have conversations about complex answers.
