Description

This comprehensive U.S. history resource will be all you need to teach the rise of labor unions and labor strikes in America. This is the only resource you will need when teaching labor unions and labor strikes of the Gilded Age! It includes a reading handout with short informational paragraphs about each labor union and each labor strike. It also includes a student worksheet, a political cartoon worksheet, and an excerpt from The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, along with open-ended questions.

The reading handout will give students short, easy-to-read paragraphs on topics such as the Pullman Strike, Haymarket Riot, Knights of Labor, and many more.

The student handout allows students to organize the information they learn after reading by sorting information into a graphic organizer. The Jungle excerpt and questions can help students really dive deep into the shocking working conditions of immigrants and what prompted the government to begin creating regulations.

Students will then use the political cartoon worksheet to analyze the cartoon and answer basic questions. They will then work with a partner to answer higher-level Bloom’s questions as they begin to focus on the message behind the cartoon.
