Progressive Era Lessons: Ready-to-Use Activities and Resources

The Progressive Era is one of those fascinating periods in US history. Most historians define the Progressive Era as beginning around 1890 and ending around 1920, although there is some debate about the exact timeline. Regardless of the specific dates, this period represents a major turning point in American history.

At its core, the Progressive Era was shaped by the rapid changes that occurred during the Gilded Age. Industrialization, urbanization, and immigration transformed the United States into a major global economy. However, these changes also created new challenges. Including unsafe working conditions, political corruption, growing inequality, and questions about how much responsibility the government should have in addressing social problems.

This is such a fun time period to teach because students can easily relate to it. And it also sparks excellent class discussion and debates. I can honestly say this is what makes teaching the Progressive Era so rewarding! Students naturally want to explore questions like: How did the Gilded Age lead to the Progressive Era? How should new technologies and industries be regulated? What role should government play in protecting citizens? So many parallels and connections to modern-day challenges can be made.

I have several Progressive Era lessons and resources designed to help you teach this important era! These resources can be used to supplement your existing curriculum or provide a complete, ready-to-use unit. In this post, I am highlighting three of my favorites: the Progressive Era Intro Lesson, Progressive Era Lesson and Activities, and Progressive Era Presidents Lesson.

Progressive Era Intro Lesson

The Progressive Era Intro Lesson is the perfect way to introduce students to this important period in American history. This complete Google Drive lesson includes everything you need to get started. It includes lesson plans (designed for three 55-minute class periods), guided notes, PowerPoint slides, student activities, teacher answer keys, and a two-day Progressive Era project with a rubric.

The main focus of this lesson is helping students understand the historical roots of modern-day issues. Students will explore how the challenges created during the Gilded Age influenced the reform movements of the Progressive Era. Students will look closer at the problems caused by rapid growth and industrialization. Then they can begin to understand why Progressivism emerged and why reforms became necessary.

This resource will work well as an introduction to the Progressive Era, a review of the Gilded Age, or as a foundation for a larger unit.

Progressive Era Lesson and Activities

If you are looking for a way to deepen student understanding of Progressivism, this Progressive Era Lesson and Activities resource is what you are looking for. This package includes a Google Drive lesson plan along with engaging activities. Everything in the resource encourage students to analyze and think critically about the goals and impact of the Progressive movement.

Rather than simply memorizing important people and events, students are encouraged to examine the bigger ideas behind Progressivism. Through discussion activities and a primary source analysis, they will explore why reformers believed change was necessary and how their efforts shaped American society.

One of my favorite parts about this resource is that it helps move students beyond the basic facts of the Progressive Era. They are challenged to think about government responsibility, social change. As well as the ongoing debate about how societies should respond when problems arise.

Finally, these Progressive Era activities are designed with teachers in mind. Everything is already organized and ready to use. Which ultimately means less prep time for you! Giving you the chance to focus on connecting with your students and facilitating meaningful conversations.
