sociology course

The start of any unit is crucial to gaining student interest. If the unit or class starts boring, many students will lose engagement for the entire course. However, if it starts out interesting, students will be excited about the class. Teachers put a lot of pressure on themselves to develop the perfect introduction. For those of us who teach sociology, this reduces the pressure! The Introduction to Sociology Unit is engaging, interactive, and challenging!

Introduction to Sociology Unit

Firstly, to dive into any Sociology course, students must learn the basics. This unit begins by introducing students to vital concepts. To accomplish this, there are guiding components filled with learning objectives.

Component 1: Basic Yet Essential Terms:

Students will begin learning what the terms sociology and empathy mean. Empathy is essential when studying how people interact with each other. Thus, objectives focus on defining sociology and understanding why it is important to show empathy.

Component 2: Sociological Imagination:

Students will work on understanding what the sociological imagination is and how it impacts decision-making. For instance, objectives focus on how people would live life differently if they lived with sociological mindfulness. Ultimately, this means that students will be thinking critically and deeply while learning the material. To apply their learning, students will even complete an intergrade project. This helps teach younger students the importance of soft skills. Therefore, this sociology unit involves taking responsibility, self-reflecting, and showing empathy, kindness, and mindfulness. Students will have a blast planning and teaching a lesson to younger students!

Component 3: Sociological Perspectives/Theories:

Much research is rooted in sociological perspectives! The objectives focus on teaching students the following perspectives: functionalist, conflict, feminist, and symbolic interactionist. To truly understand each perspective, students will also complete a project. Here, they will define the perspective, outline the history, tell who influenced it, explain criticism, and provide examples. Then, students will explain how the different theories are still present in society. Their knowledge will grow greatly when they can connect what they learn with their environment. As an added element, students will learn about different jobs in sociology and psychology. Ultimately, the introduction to the Sociology unit teaches students all about sociology while helping some gain more guidance on a future career.

Component 4: Sociological Experiment and Test:

Students will have learned a ton of information over the previous lessons. However, students will have guidance and support throughout the entire process. Now they are ready to show everything they have learned. To do this, they will complete a Do Nothing experiment and observe their thoughts and feelings. Lastly, they will take a test to provide data on how much they have learned.
